Tell me more about Squash Haven.
The key to Squash Haven’s success is our intensive and longitudinal approach to youth development. Fifth through twelfth grade team members participate in tuition-free year-round programming that includes differentiated individual tutoring, group academic enrichment, squash instruction, community service, values-based character development, exposure to a broad range of enrichment opportunities, and college preparation. Consistent with the long term goal of graduation from institutions of higher education, college-aged team members continue to receive academic, athletic, and personal advice/support, and access to internship and summer employment opportunities. Squash Haven relies on a small full time staff based at Yale whose work is complemented by the volunteer efforts of the University’s squash teams and academic volunteers. New middle school students are selected annually on the basis of their motivation and commitment and are expected to actively participate in the program through the end of college. Squash Haven works with students from 21 New Haven public schools and targets students from low income families who will be first generation college students.
Squash Haven has helped team members earn 42 national level squash championships and $1.8 million annually in renewable financial aid awards. Team members have also given over 6000 hours of service to the New Haven community. 78% of program graduates have matriculated at colleges and universities ranked in the top 100 in the country, including Brown, Bowdoin, Georgetown, and Yale, among others. 18 have played on college squash teams, including 4 captains and 2 #1 players. Over 95% of team members and families surveyed agree that Squash Haven has had a positive influence on their desire to do well in school, academic success, and preparation for their academic future.
